Roy Lichtenstein, like many others of the day, served during WWII. War-time heroism and imagery remained prevalent in the US through the 1950’s and 60’s and struck a chord with Lichtenstein in popular comic books. From ‘62-’64, Roy painted several macho-military scenes with machine guns, planes, and explosions. Some think his comic-style explosions represented the cold war feeling and the over-hyped nuclear threat from the USSR in those days.
Years later when Lichtenstein expanded his medium out to sculptures, he once again paid homage to the cartoon-like form of his explosions and made a few multi-layered works. This pin stems from a sketch of one of those.
